| News Article Vegetables in Moldova During the Soviet era, Moldova, with its fertile soils, high percentage of arable land, and good access to irrigation was a large supplier of both fruits and vegetables to many of the countries of the former Soviet Union. However, after 1991 the state-controlled irrigation system began to deteriorate, and the production of both fruits and vegetables began to decline.Today, Moldova is beginning to rebuild the fruit sector, particularly with the apples and table grapes., as well as some increasing production of stone fruit. The country is a net importer, however, of many of the high value vegetables, such as tomatoes, sweet peppers, eggplant, and cucumbers, with most of the high quality product coming from Turkey, as shown in the picture. In addition, the country is still a long way from EurepGAP compliance and modern packing practices. To assist the Moldovan farmers and investors in this area, USAID, working together with CNFA and WFLO/IARW recently supported an international team of experts that designed and provided the financial modeling of modern vegetable packing houses. This information will all be made available to the Ministry of Agriculture and local farmers/investors, and USAID will look at supporting projects that will erect modern packinghouses. |
