Bananas in Bangladesh

Though bananas represent the most important product in the international fruit and vegetable business, for many non-exporting countries in the world bananas also represent one of the most important sources of nutrition.

In Bangladesh, a country of 144,000,000 people in a very small area, bananas are now almost 45% of the entire fruit production of the country. With more than 40,000 hectares in production now, bananas have come to be perhaps the second most important food crop (after rice) for the Bengali people.

However, though the total production represents a great deal of food, the average holdings are small (less than one hectare per farmer), and the yields are quite low when compared to world standards, and particularly those of the major banana exporting countries.

Average yields are 15-16 tons per hectare per year, compared to yields in excess of 50 tons per hectare in many of the commercial farms in Latin America and the Philippines. In addition, rudimentary transportation and ripening systems cause losses of 30-40% of the fruit before it reaches the final customer.

In order to address this problem, Bangladesh is now actively using international banana experts who have been working various farming organizations in order to improve all facets of the banana production and delivery chain.

Improvements in some areas of the country are already being seen in variety selection, population control, pruning practices, pest control, harvesting procedures, and transportation infrastructure.

Bangladesh is a long way from becoming an international exporter of bananas, but it is making steady progress in delivering a lower cost and higher quality product to its own population.
